Why It’s Essential to Keep Your Gutters Clean

Gutter filled with leavesIf you have brand new gutters from Piney Orchard roofing, you have a fresh start.  Time to start anew, with more opportunities to keep your gutters from clogging and causing problems.  A clogged gutter can cause mold to grow and water damage to affect your walls.  Not only that, but a misplaced downspout can create issues regarding your foundation.  Gutters are an aspect of your home you might not think about too often…but you should.  Read on to find out why.

Clogged gutters

Very little water coming from your downspout is a sign that your gutters are clogged.  This doesn’t have to cause significant damage if you plan on doing yearly maintenance soon, but if it isn’t taken care of immediately, it could pose a risk to your home.  Water can overflow and get into your walls or siding, causing warping and water damage.  Too much water can cause your gutters to get heavy enough to break.  If you live in a wooded area, it won’t take a lot of debris to clog your gutters, so be sure to check.

Downspout problems

A common mistake related to downspouts includes how close they can be to houses.  Drainage should be at least six feet away from the foundation of your home.  Otherwise, water can seep into the fragile soil in concentrated areas that will cause damage.  Well-drained soil is key to not only a good yard, but also your house’s safety.  If you need a solution to this, you could always invest in a downspout that extends past your yard.  A simple form of tubing from the hardware store can be outfitted to your downspout, so you can direct the water flow away from your foundation and into other soil that won’t compromise your home.

Also, ensure that your gutter has the properly sized draining outlet.  A smaller outlet can mean more debris buildup, and you want as much drainage as possible.  Make sure large leaves are passing through without issue, because it’s far easier to clear those away from your drain extension than it is to climb up and clean your gutters after every storm.
