How to Get Rid of Moss on Your Roof (And How to Prevent It)

Roof damageMoss can end up being a serious problem for your roof if you don’t address it immediately. When moss grows rapidly, it builds up and causes shingles to rise. This can allow for water to seep in underneath and lead to rot and water damage. If you live somewhere moist and wooded, it can be hard to keep moss from growing. It can get even harder to control that growth. Read on to find out how to clean away this moss, and how to stop it from happening in the first place.

Roof Cleaners

There are several products on the market that involve spraying and forgetting. All you have to do is get up there, give your roof a good coat, and wait. Sometimes, if you spray in the winter, it might take until spring for the cleaner to activate. But when it does, all that green buildup will be gone! Some use water to activate, so it starts working every time it rains. They can come in liquid form that you pour over the shingles, or as a spray that allows for even distribution. Which cleaner you choose should be up to you, when you read reviews and whether or not the product will do well in your environment.

Change the Environment

Drastic changes can include removing shade, which is where moss grows best. See, moss loves a humid, shady environment where the sun is not too harsh and it can grab water from the air. Changing this by trimming trees or even removing them can cause the moss to dry out. You can also change the surface it grows on by making it either more acidic or basic. While you can do this with cleaners, you can also use household items like baking soda or lemon juice to sprinkle over your roof now and then, focusing on problem areas.

Keep the Moss Gone

Make sure you maintain your roof throughout the rest of the year to keep it in top shape. Get up there now and again and brush away fallen branches or debris. Wash off any green stuff the second you see it so you don’t give it a chance to spread. And don’t power wash thinking it will be easier. It will just end up harming your roof. When you rinse off the cleaner, make sure you do so without pointing the stream under the shingles, as this can have an adverse effect on the wood.
