Can Hail Damage My Roof?

Hail stones

Some parts of Maryland have already seen their first hail storm this summer. We all get nervous about our cars and windows when it hails; hearing “golf-ball sized” is about as terrifying as it gets when you’ve just bought a new vehicle. But not a lot of people think about their roofing when it hails, assuming their house is the safest place to be. Contrary to popular belief, hail can seriously damage your roofing and the accessories that come with it.

How to tell if you have roofing damage from hail

The easiest way to tell if you have functional roof damage, otherwise known as what an insurance company will cover the repairs for, is to check the metals on your roof. This includes gutters, ventilation, and exhaust caps. You should also check around your skylights, even if you have a protective covering on. There will be obvious dents if the storm has done damage, and you can take pictures to prove this.

If your shingles are damaged, they will have dents, split wood, asphalt fracture, or you may find granules in your gutter’s runoff water. Granules being removed are not covered by insurance companies, but they also don’t mean that you have significant damage.

What you should do

Always call a professional to come out and take a look. They’ll be able to give you an official statement about the damage that you can hand over to the insurance company.  It’s important to get your roof fixed right away, because hail damage can lead to something more serious. Hail damage on its own usually doesn’t do anything horrific, but it does leave your roof more vulnerable to riskier business. Bent or split shingles aren’t as sturdy during high winds, and bent gutters won’t direct water away from your walls and siding. This means water damage and more money for you to shell out. A few replaced tiles or a new section of gutter is not going to cost nearly as much as a new roof and attic will.
